We disagree with this New Yorker cartoon. Lighting a cigarette with a road flare just lessens the duration of each smoke; if anything he would need to smoke more cigarettes to compensate.

Something else is making him smoke less. The only possible explanation is that he can't afford to buy both the flares and enough cigarettes.

Therefore, we feel a more appropriate caption would have been, "I find that I tend to smoke less since I started buying road flares, because I can't afford to buy as many cigarettes."
