We: Let we ask you something: When someone uses the term “old-world charm,” what does that connote to you?

Our Boss: Let’s look it up. “The Eastern Hemisphere. The term is often used to refer specifically to Europe.”

We: Yeah, so why would [Name of one of our magazines] use it to describe Canada?

Our Boss: Maybe they mean “quaint”? What do you think it means?

We: We think of Europe, more specifically Spain, and when we think of Spain, we think of the Inquisition.

Our Boss: The Inquisitorial charms of Canada?

We: And when we think of Canada, we think of beavers…

Our Boss: So to you “Canada’s old-world charm” is bearded men in red cloaks torturing beavers.

We: Which isn’t very charming at all.
