Underlining words and phrases for emphasis:
Originally this was done to indicate italics to the typesetter.
(It's a bit difficult to handwrite italics.)
Now that we have computers and Ctrl + I, underlining should be dead as Latin.
But it's not. People do it ALL THE TIME.
And it looks dreadful.
So don't do it.
