commas and independent clauses

Staple this to some tender area so you don't forget: A comma separates independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction.

That means if each clause can stand alone as its own sentence, and both are connected by "and," "but," "or," "nor," "so," etc. you use a goddamn comma.
